This isn't a philosophical shift. It's a documented one, with named adhesives, prohibited part sources, measured repair limits, and explicit warranty consequences. Here's what changed.
GM Closed the Door on Aftermarket Glass — and Tied It Directly to Calibration
GM has been sharpening its parts language all year, but the June revision went further than a recommendation. I-CAR's Repairability Technical Support portal notes that GM's Use of Genuine GM Original Equipment Parts document was revised in June to say the company does not support and strictly prohibits the use of salvage, recycled/used, or non-Genuine aftermarket parts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles. That's a hard prohibition replacing what used to read as guidance.
The glass-specific piece matters more for calibration work. GM's windshield replacement position statement prohibits aftermarket and non-GM OE glass outright, and states that a service point calibration or learn procedure is critical whenever a front view windshield camera or sensor is removed, reinstalled, or replaced — or when the windshield itself is removed and replaced, per Autobody News' summary of the updated statements.
Read that trigger carefully. It isn't camera R&I that starts the clock. It's the glass. Pull a windshield on a GM vehicle with a forward-facing camera and you've generated a calibration line item, whether or not anyone unbolted the sensor.
GM also issued a separate ADAS component position statement dated July 20 approving only new GM Genuine ADAS parts — radars, cameras, sensors, control modules, wiring, brackets, and mounting hardware — and prohibiting salvaged, recycled, reconditioned, remanufactured, aftermarket, and secondary-market versions. GM says damage, failure, or nonperformance traced to non-GM parts isn't covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty or any GM service plan.
I-CAR Reminded Everyone the Windshield Is Structural
I-CAR's July 31 GM glass replacement update makes the engineering case behind the paperwork: the windshield contributes to roof and A-pillar strength, helps manage collision energy, and is integral to several advanced safety systems.
The technical requirements in that piece are the kind that get skipped under production pressure. GM specifies different adhesives depending on the vehicle and the glass being installed, and warns against intermixing primers or adhesives across product lines. Expired adhesive is out. Pinch-weld flanges with corrosion or sheet metal repair must be refinished to restore bonding strength. And GM's retention warning is blunt: use a urethane adhesive system meeting the FMVSS 212 crash test standard, because failure to do so may allow unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle.
That's the substrate your camera is aimed through. Bond it wrong and no calibration in the world makes the repair sound.
Lucid Wrote the Most Prescriptive Glass Statement Yet
Lucid's glass and glazing position statement, dated July 29 and covering all models, is worth reading even if you never see a Lucid — because it's a preview of where prescriptive OEM documentation is heading.
Lucid states that the condition of the windshield and front canopy glass is critical for proper SRS performance, and that any windshield or front canopy glass removed during a repair must be replaced with new OEM glass. It names BetaPrime 5504G and BetaSeal U-428 Plus as the only approved primer and adhesive on Lucid vehicles. Lucid-trained technicians must complete all glass-triggered calibrations using Lucid tooling and equipment specified in the service manual.
Chip and crack repair is boxed in with actual numbers: damage area smaller than 1.25 inches, impact point no larger than ¼ inch, nothing within 3 inches of the glass edge, nothing within 3 inches of any ADAS camera, and nothing in the driver's forward field of view. Lucid also requires water leak and wind noise testing before delivery, plus documentation uploaded to its TechInfo Portal — VIN and installed part numbers, procedure references, adhesive and primer control evidence, and completed calibration results.
Then the consequence: failure to follow Lucid's procedures, compatibility requirements, bonding controls, and post-repair operations may result in denial of warranty coverage, and in those cases responsibility and liability for the repair remain with the facility that performed the work.
Volvo moved in the same direction, with I-CAR posting a glass replacement requirements update and a windshield replacement position statement in June. Ford, meanwhile, added a twelfth Ford-brand statement — ADAS Integrity and Technical Imperatives — in the 2026 Vol. 2 On Target, covering scanning, calibration, and how sensor obstructions and non-original parts affect ADAS performance.
What It Means for Your Shop
Four things change on Monday.
Re-scope your glass sublets. If a vendor is installing aftermarket glass on GM vehicles, that job now conflicts with a written OEM prohibition — and your shop's name is on the repair order. Ask what glass they source and get it in writing.
Treat windshield R&R as a calibration trigger by default. On a GM camera-equipped vehicle, pulling the glass generates the calibration requirement on its own. Build that into your estimating logic rather than catching it at delivery.
Document adhesive and primer, not just calibration results. Both GM and Lucid now tie warranty coverage to bonding controls — product line, expiration date, cure time. A calibration report that doesn't reference the glass procedure is half a file. If you're already producing an insurance-friendly calibration report, add adhesive part numbers and cure times to it.
Check your target and tooling coverage against the vehicles you actually see. Statements like Lucid's require OEM-specific calibration equipment. Knowing which platforms your current targets and scan tool cover — and which ones will send work out the door — is a purchasing decision, not a shop-floor one.
Where This Leaves You
Calibration volume keeps climbing — CCC data shows calibrations now appearing on more than 35% of DRP estimates. Glass work is a large and growing share of that. What these three statements have in common is that they move liability toward the repair facility with specificity: named products, measured tolerances, required documentation. That specificity cuts both ways. It's harder to comply with, and it's much easier to prove you did.
